Customer variants
A persona rarely behaves identically across every customer. A “System Lead” at a Big Bank faces tighter approval chains and more oversight than the same role at a fast-moving FinTech. Variants capture that nuance on a single persona.
How variants work
On a UX persona, add a variant for each relevant customer type. For each variant you can:
- Override values for specific fields (decision authority, pain points, technical profile, and so on).
- Add “what changes” notes explaining how and why this context differs.
The base persona stays the common thread; variants record the deltas.
Why not just duplicate the persona?
Duplicating leads to drift — five near-identical personas that slowly disagree. Variants keep one source of truth and make the differences explicit and comparable.
Using variants
- Compare a persona’s variants side by side to see how a role shifts across segments.
- Pair variants with Launchpads to tailor a setup to a customer type.
